It Takes a Village
Touch A Heart staff with Lucy Zhang (center) of Dismas Charities, which manages the Federal Bureau of Prisons Day Reporting Center in Honolulu, at the center's opening in February. We're proud to have Dismas Charities as one of our partners.
Partnerships are instrumental in enhancing Touch A Heart's goal of supporting re-entry success and reducing recidivism through employment and rehabilitation opportunities. We're pleased to share our collaborations with Dismas Charities, Puʻa Foundation, and Transforming Lives (TL) Jail and Prison Ministry. Central to our approach is the concept of ʻohana, which emphasizes working together as one "family" to create lasting change and support individuals in their transformative journeys.

Our partnership with Chaplain Barbara Gatewood of TL Jail and Prison Ministry has opened doors for us to participate in numerous resource fairs at state facilities. Our Director of Operations and Training, Colin, recently attended a Women's Community Correctional Center (WCCC) resource fair, where he met over 200 women who are currently incarcerated. He shared information about our programs, helping the women understand the support available to them post-release.

Our collaboration with Dismas Charities' Day Reporting Center, led by Lucy Zhang, provides crucial support for individuals transitioning from federal prisons back to Hawaii.

The Puʻa Foundation trains individuals to become Hawaii Certified Peer Specialists. These specialists have lived experience in substance use recovery or being justice-involved and are trained to support others facing similar challenges. Two of our team members will be taking part in this training and getting certified. At a recent seminar, Kimmy Takata, President of Pacific Peer Connection and part of the Puʻa Foundation, shared her testimony and highlighted the power of Peer Specialists.

We also continue to work with He Ala Hou O Ke Ola (HAHOKO), Shelter of Wisdom, and First L.A.P. (Life After Prison), among others. These partnerships provide essential support for our participants, from internships to housing to employment opportunities.

We're excited and grateful for the possibilities that our partnerships bring and remain committed to transforming lives, one heart at a time.

Baker's Heart Spotlight
We're excited to share a heartwarming moment involving our extended Touch A Heart family. Kosuke, the son of our volunteer Kanako and brother of volunteer Ryusuke, is a political science student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Recently, Kosuke had the honor of presenting a Baker's Heart gift set to Seiko Noda, a prominent Japanese politician. We're proud of Kosuke for his work and appreciate him sharing about Touch A Heart with such pride.
Our Baker's Heart team has also been busy gearing up for the 30th Annual Made in Hawaii Festival! This exciting event will be held from August 23-25 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Exhibit Halls I, II, and III. Join us on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We're looking forward to showcasing our Baker's Heart products and connecting with our community. Mark your calendars and come support local!

Aloha, Gigi!
It's with a heavy heart that we announce our wonderful baker, Gigi (pictured on the left with our Program Coordinator, Tina), has stepped away from Touch A Heart to focus on her health. Out of respect for her privacy, this is all we can share at this time. While we're sad to see her go, we're grateful for the contributions she made to our ʻohana. Gigi's passion and creativity will be dearly missed. Please join us in wishing Gigi well and thanking her for her service to Touch A Heart. We appreciate your support and understanding.
