Growing With Confidence
We're excited to share an update on our former apprentice Melissa, who stepped into a full-time position last October as a Food Service Worker at Lanakila Pacific, one of our nonprofit partners that empowers individuals with cognitive, physical, social, or age-related challenges through specialized programs and social enterprises. Their food service division provides meals to schools, adult day programs, and homebound seniors, while also operating a cafeteria and catering services. Like Touch A Heart, their work blends purpose with productivity—using food service as a pathway to independence and meaningful employment.
"Touch A Heart has taught me all the skills that I use in my new job," Melissa said, noting that in her new role, she does a little bit of everything, from cutting vegetables and plating bentos to labeling containers and washing dishes.
Adjusting to the new environment has come with opportunities for growth. "Working in a larger group can be challenging at times with so many different personalities," she reflected, "but I'm able to cope with different situations." She now finds joy in encouraging her coworkers and reminding herself, "we are a team."
Melissa credits much of her advancement to her time with us that included weekly classes, Baker's Heart pop-ups, and educational field trips. "Touch A Heart has helped me mature in so many different ways," she shared. She still remembers her first meeting with Executive Director Robin and Director of Operations & Training Colin, calling it "one of the most significant turning points in my life."
While she misses the outings, celebrations, and weekly time with volunteers, we continue to be an important part of her life. "Touch A Heart will always have a special place in my heart because we were one ʻohana," she said.
Melissa's journey reflects what's possible when training, encouragement, and opportunity come together—and we couldn't be more proud of her.
