Guidance Beyond the Kitchen

The relationships we build at Touch A Heart extend beyond graduation. Chef-Trainer Curtis continues to mentor Moses and Keawe, two recent graduates now working with the Kalihi Union Church maintenance team, demonstrating the ongoing support and connection that are at the heart of our mission.
This Father's Day, we celebrate and honor not only fathers, but also the father figures who guide and support others along their journey.

At Touch A Heart, Chef-Trainer Curtis has many roles. In addition to teaching culinary skills and workplace readiness, he serves as a mentor and positive role model to many of the young people who come through our program. "For me, it's about sharing my experience because I've seen a lot in my years," Curtis said. "I don't want anyone to feel isolated, lonely, or without help and support, so I want to be that person for them."

Many of our young interns arrive searching for direction, stability, and a sense of belonging. Curtis builds trust by being open about his own experiences and creating a safe space for them to share theirs. Whether teaching kitchen skills or life lessons, he hopes to pass on the importance of responsibility, accountability, and perseverance.

One moment that stands out to him involved an intern who didn't have transportation to graduation. Wanting to ensure she was included, Curtis picked her up so she could take part in the celebration. "I didn't want her to feel left out," he shared. "I wanted her to know that she was important and to make sure no one was left behind."

Curtis has also realized that the young people he works with have taught him something as well. "Even though I wasn't there for my children, I now have an opportunity to be a father-figure to others by sharing love, support, and being there for them," he said.

As we celebrate Father's Day, Curtis encourages young people to "find a good community and good people that can help push you forward." He also reminds fathers and father figures: "Even though we make mistakes in our lives, don't let that define you. Keep pushing forward. There will be opportunities to give back and show others love and encouragement."

The Touch A Heart ʻohana is grateful for all fathers and father figures who make a difference in the lives of others. Happy Father's Day!
