Grounded in Growth
Apprentice Joseph W. joined the Touch A Heart ʻohana about a year ago as an intern, taking a meaningful step back into the workforce. Today, he reflects on our time together.
"I didn't work for about seven months, and coming into the program really helped me gradually get back into working and building more confidence at a pace that was good for me," Joseph shared. Just as important was having a workplace that supports his sobriety and overall well-being.
Over the past year, Joseph has grown personally and professionally. "I'm really glad to have had the opportunity to sharpen my work skills and habits, like coming to work on time and being a good employee," he said. "Those things are just as important to me as they are to Touch A Heart." He especially values the culture of encouragement within the team. "We share our thoughts and push each other to learn and grow. Working with different people helps improve my personal life skills."
One of Joseph's favorite responsibilities is working on Baker's Heart cookies. "Other people might find it tedious, but it helps me feel focused and grounded," he said. "I love knowing people are eating them and really enjoying them—that brings me a lot of joy."
Looking ahead, Joseph is focused on stability. "I'm looking forward to saving, getting my own place, staying grounded with work, and living a simple life that helps me balance fun with my sobriety."
Family is a strong motivator for Joseph. He enjoys sharing cooking skills with his daughter. Last holiday season, thanks to your generosity, his grandchildren also received gifts through our Giving Tree. "It was very meaningful to me," he shared. "I'm very grateful, and I want to tell everyone thank you so much."
Reflecting on his journey, he offers encouragement to others: "It doesn't matter how old you are or what your situation is—there is always the ability to change within you. Touch A Heart has helped me not just at work, but in everyday life, and I really feel cared for."
