Young Hearts, Big Impact

As we continue to celebrate National Volunteer Month, we're spotlighting two of our student volunteers, twin sisters Emma and Emmy, daughters of Business Operations Liaison Maiko.

Emma and Emmy were introduced to Touch A Heart through their mother when they helped us at the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) Summit in 2023. That event left a lasting impression. Emmy was "amazed that there was an intention of lending a helping hand towards the community."

Emma was similarly inspired, recalling how she was "struck by the determination" of Executive Director Robin and the encouragement of others involved. "The message and stories of the community were imperative... I wanted to help in any way I could," she said.

From packaging products to tabling pop-ups and making crafts for ʻOhana Meals customers, the sisters contribute in many ways. Emmy especially enjoys connecting with customers at events. "I love to see people's faces light up when they try the cookies and biscotti bites for the first time," she shared.

Meanwhile, Emma enjoys behind-the-scenes work. Packaging days are her favorite, where she can "work alongside others who also support Touch A Heart's mission"—a space filled with "very dedicated, very kind individuals."

For both, volunteering is about connection. "A smile on someone else's face...spreads onto me," Emmy shared. Emma echoed this sentiment, saying it makes her happy "to share the joy with other people who buy the products that volunteers and employees worked hard to make."

Emma believes that volunteering "fosters a sense of community... and makes you feel part of something bigger than yourself." Emmy added that it's also about "the joy and appreciation you feel when you're with people from different backgrounds."

We're grateful for Emma and Emmy's giving hearts—a beautiful reminder that making a difference can start at any age.
